Bullaun stone, Kilcormick, Co. Wexford

Set into the graveyard wall at Boleyvogue Roman Catholic Church in County Wexford is a stone that does not quite belong there.

A bullaun stone, roughly 85 centimetres across and carved from green stone, sits with a single worn basin in its upper surface, the kind of circular hollow that was ground or pecked into rock during the early medieval period, possibly for ritual use, possibly for more practical purposes such as grinding, and possibly for both at different times. What makes its presence in this wall slightly odd is that Boleyvogue was never its home.

The stone originated in the old graveyard at Kilcormick, some distance away. At some point before 1934 it had been shifted out of that graveyard and left on the wet ground surrounding it, vulnerable and unceremonious. In 1934 it was moved again, this time to Boleyvogue, where it was incorporated into the boundary wall of the churchyard there. The detail comes from the Irish Folklore Commission Schools Manuscripts, a remarkable body of material collected in the 1930s when schoolchildren across Ireland were asked to document local knowledge, folklore, and antiquities. That a bullaun stone's wanderings were recorded in this way at all is a small reminder of how much quiet local history passed through those school copybooks.

The basin itself measures roughly 42 to 45 centimetres in diameter and is about 10 to 13 centimetres deep, which is a fairly substantial hollow. Bullaun stones of this type are found across Ireland, often associated with early ecclesiastical sites, and the water that collects in their basins has long been considered to have curative or protective properties. At Boleyvogue, the stone is now fixed in place rather than freestanding, but the basin remains visible, still collecting whatever falls into it.
