Bullaun stone, Killeena, Co. Cork

Some archaeological sites are remarkable for what they contain.

This one, in the townland of Killeena in County Cork, is remarkable for what nobody has been able to find. A bullaun stone, one of those large rocks bearing one or more rounded depressions ground into their surface, typically associated with early Christian sites and sometimes believed to have been used for grinding or for collecting rainwater thought to have curative properties, was recorded here at some point. Then the vegetation closed in, and the stone was simply not located when surveyors came looking.

Bullaun stones are scattered across Ireland in considerable numbers, often found near early churches, holy wells, or burial grounds, and Killeena would not be an unusual setting for one. The name of the townland itself may hint at ecclesiastical origins, but the stone's precise location, its dimensions, and any features that might distinguish it from the general type remain unrecorded. When the area was assessed, the site was described as overgrown and inaccessible, and no further detail was possible.

What that leaves is a gap in the record rather than a place to visit. The stone may still be there, buried under bramble and scrub, or it may have been moved or broken up long before anyone thought to document it carefully. Either way, Killeena offers a small reminder that the archaeological landscape of County Cork is not uniformly catalogued and legible. Some of it is simply waiting, quietly, under the undergrowth.
