Bullaun stone, Knockane, Co. Kerry

A sandstone block with a near-perfectly circular hole bored into its centre does not look like much at first glance.

But the bullaun stone at Knockane, Co. Kerry, belongs to a category of object that has puzzled antiquarians for generations. Bullauns are stones, usually of considerable age, that carry one or more cup-shaped depressions, whether ground in by human hands or worn naturally, and they appear across Ireland in association with early ecclesiastical sites, holy wells, and boundaries. This one sits to the north-west of Toberlacken holy well, a pairing that is far from coincidental. The stone itself is modest in size, roughly 1.1 metres by 0.9 metres and 0.6 metres deep, with a central hollow 17 centimetres across and 12 centimetres deep.

What sets the Knockane example apart is the brief, tantalising record it left behind in the Kerry Field Notes, a series of local archaeological observations compiled in the late 1930s. By 1939, the stone had apparently only just been lifted from the ground, suggesting it had spent some period buried, whether deliberately concealed, simply forgotten beneath accumulating soil, or something else entirely. A year later, in 1940, the same notes refer to it by an altogether different name: a siege stone. The term is unexplained in the surviving record, and it does not map neatly onto any standard archaeological classification. Whether it reflects a local oral tradition, a misidentification, or some remembered association with conflict or ritual is now impossible to say with certainty. The gap between what the object is and what it was once called is itself a small historical puzzle.
