Bullaun stone, Loughkent, Co. Tipperary

At Loughkent in County Tipperary, a small limestone boulder sits wedged into the top of a graveyard wall, roughly 87 centimetres above the ground.

What makes it worth a second look is not its size but its symmetry: the stone carries two hollows, one on its upper face and one mirrored on its underside, each about 12 centimetres across and 7 centimetres deep. This is a bullaun stone, a type of carved or worn rock hollow found across early medieval Ireland and often associated with ecclesiastical sites. They are thought to have served ritual or curative purposes, their basins collecting rainwater that was sometimes believed to have healing properties.

The stone is set into the western wall of a graveyard enclosing a medieval church, positioned towards the southern end of that wall. Bullaun stones are frequently found in the vicinity of early Christian sites, and their presence here at Loughkent fits that broader pattern, though the precise circumstances of how this particular stone ended up mortared into a boundary wall rather than resting freely on the ground are not recorded. It may have been moved and reused at some point during the construction or repair of the enclosure wall, a fate that befell many such stones as their original context was forgotten or disregarded. The unusual detail of matching hollows on both faces is relatively uncommon and raises the question of whether the stone was always oriented this way, or whether it was simply turned on its side when it was built into the wall.
