Bullaun stone (present location), Rathduff, Co. Mayo

Holy Sites & Wells
A large irregular boulder sitting in the grounds of Rathduff church carries two identities at once.
A plaque beside it names it the Carrowmore mass rock, yet the stone itself is a bullaun, a type of ancient worked rock characterised by one or more deliberately ground hollows on its upper surface. Bullauns are found across Ireland, often near early ecclesiastical sites, and their original purpose remains debated; theories range from the practical, grinding grain or preparing pigments, to the ritual. This particular stone has two hollows set close together on its flat upper face: one circular, roughly 33cm across, and one oval, measuring about 43cm by 36cm, each sunk to a depth of around 8 to 10cm.
