Burial ground, Ballynamona, Co. Offaly

Gravel extraction is not an activity normally associated with archaeological discovery, but at Ballynamona in County Offaly it was the mechanical diggers, not the archaeologists, who found the dead first.

Human remains came to light during the working of two gravel pits, and it was the State Pathology Unit that first flagged what had been uncovered, prompting the National Monuments Service to conduct a site inspection in September 2021. What followed was a ten-day rescue excavation carried out in December of that year, a compressed and urgent piece of work driven by the need to record and recover before the site deteriorated further.

The excavation, conducted under licence by Archaeological Consultancy Services Unit, focused on cleaning the section faces of both pits and systematically recording every feature visible in the exposed soil profiles. In total, 26 features were identified: 21 confirmed burials, 4 possible burials, and a single charnel pit, which is a deposit where disarticulated or commingled bones are gathered, sometimes the result of earlier graves being disturbed and the remains redeposited together. A large quantity of human bones was recovered across the site. Some had already worked loose from the section faces and were lifted by the excavation team, while others remained stable enough within the surrounding soil matrix to be preserved in place rather than removed. The combination of a charnel pit alongside individual burials suggests a burial ground with a long or complicated history of use, where the ground had been turned over more than once and earlier interments disturbed by later ones.
