Burial ground, Coolgarriv, Co. Kerry

Most of the graves in this burial ground at Coolgarriv, in County Kerry, bear no name.

They register as low, irregular mounds in rough pasture, on a north-facing slope, their occupants unrecorded in stone. The enclosure itself is substantial and well-made, a roughly rectangular space measuring approximately 92 metres east to west and 68 metres north to south, surrounded by a rubble stone wall topped with vertical coping stones. A gate opens onto the road to the west, and a plaque there carries the inscription "St. John's Cemetery AD 1850". Seven plain white crosses, erected by the local community in recent years, are the only formal markers now standing among the mounds.

The cemetery appears to have been in use from the early nineteenth century through to the 1940s, a span that covers some of the most turbulent and sorrowful decades in Irish rural life, including the years of the Great Famine and the slow decline of many small communities in the decades that followed. What makes its history quietly peculiar is an absence in the cartographic record: the burial ground does not appear on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1846. That survey was extraordinarily detailed for its time, and the omission raises questions that local knowledge alone cannot fully answer. Whether the ground was simply too new to have been noted by the surveyors, or whether its use was informal enough to escape official recognition, is unclear. The 1850 date on the gate plaque suggests the site may have been formalised around the time of the Famine, when the need for burial space in rural Ireland was urgent and sometimes outpaced any administrative record-keeping.
