Burial ground, Cornaire, Co. Cork

In a field of level tillage on a north-facing slope in Cornaire, there is a low raised platform that has been quietly mapped, noted, and half-forgotten for the better part of two centuries.

It is roughly circular, about ten metres across and less than a metre high, faced on the outside with stone and filled on the inside with dumped field stones. That combination, a deliberately constructed earthen ring with a stone revetment, sitting in ordinary farmland, suggests something much older beneath the surface than the surrounding landscape would imply.

The platform appears on Ordnance Survey six-inch maps from both 1842 and 1902, marked each time with hachuring to indicate its raised, circular form. The fact that cartographers noted it on two successive surveys across sixty years suggests it was already a recognised feature of the landscape, not something newly thrown up or casually noticed. Locally, the site has long been called a burial ground, a name that carries real weight in the Irish countryside, where such oral traditions often preserve a memory of function that no written record has caught up with. Whether it is a Bronze Age ring barrow, a type of burial mound defined by a circular bank and sometimes a central interment, or something else entirely, has not been formally established. The field stones in the interior complicate the picture; they may be later dumping by farmers clearing the surrounding land, or they may be the collapsed remains of an original stone structure.
