Burial ground, Graigueadrisly, Co. Laois

There is a field in County Laois where, according to at least two editions of the Ordnance Survey map, a burial ground once existed.

It appears on the six-inch maps of 1841 and 1908, dutifully recorded by cartographers, and yet the ground itself offers nothing back. No headstones, no earthworks, no hollow in the soil that might suggest disturbed earth. The only thing that breaks the surface, as the undulating countryside rolls around it, is a small natural outcrop of rock.

When the historian William Carrigan investigated in the early 1900s, he found the site in Michael Hennessy's "Well field" in Graigue and came away largely empty-handed. Writing in his 1905 history of the diocese of Ossory, he noted that the place had no appearance of ever having been a graveyard, that there was nothing to attract notice beyond those few cropping rocks, and that local people held only a vague notion that burials had once taken place there, without being able to say anything more definite. The maps had given the place a name and a designation; the land itself had quietly shed all evidence. Whether the graveyard was early medieval, associated with a forgotten parish boundary, or something else entirely, Carrigan could not determine, and nothing since has filled the gap.

What remains is essentially a cartographic ghost, a label applied to a piece of ground that had already lost the memory of what it marked. The Ordnance Survey's habit of recording local tradition alongside physical features occasionally preserves exactly this kind of marginal knowledge, the half-remembered, the unverifiable, the site that exists more in the act of being named than in anything a visitor could point to.
