Burial Ground, Kildun, Co. Mayo

Between a burial ground and a piece of folklore, a low earthen mound in Kildun, County Mayo has accumulated names and interpretations across the centuries without quite yielding to any of them.

By 1837, when the first detailed Ordnance Survey maps were drawn up, it was recorded simply as a burial ground, a rectangular enclosed area of roughly twenty by thirteen metres. By the 1893 revision, something had shifted in local imagination: the site had acquired the name "Giant's Grave", one of those recurring placename types found across Ireland that signals a community reaching for a mythological explanation of something ancient and unexplained underfoot.

The mound itself is oval in shape, about fourteen metres by ten metres, and rises to a modest height of less than a metre. Two pillar-stones stand upright within it, one of them a cross-inscribed slab with a cross set within a circle, a form associated with early Christian memorial tradition. A standing stone marks the south-western end. About forty yards to the west, two small stone cairns, each roughly five metres across and less than a metre high, add to the cluster of features without clarifying what they belong to. Ruairí de Valéra and Seán Ó Nualláin, who surveyed megalithic monuments across Ireland in the mid-twentieth century, examined the site in 1964 and concluded, with measured directness, that there was no reason to assume a megalithic tomb had ever existed here. The mound, in other words, is probably not a passage tomb or court cairn in the recognised prehistoric tradition, even if its profile and the stones it contains suggest something deliberate and commemorative.

What remains is a site that resists easy classification: neither a confirmed prehistoric monument nor a straightforward post-medieval burial enclosure, but an oval rise in the ground holding two ancient stones, one of them marked with a Christian symbol, the other a plain upright, and a folk name that arrived late but has stuck.
