Burial ground, Killinure, Co. Limerick

Some sites are remarkable precisely because there is nothing left to see.

On a south-facing slope of gently rolling pasture near Killinure in County Limerick, a burial ground once occupied a roughly circular area of around forty metres across. Today, according to the site record compiled by Denis Power, there is no evident trace of the monument at all. The land rolls on quietly, with open views in every direction, giving no indication that anything ever lay beneath.

What we know of the site comes largely from two sources. The first is the 1840 Ordnance Survey map, which marks the location as a circular feature and labels it plainly as "Site of Burial Ground", suggesting that even the original surveyors understood they were recording something already diminished or lost. The second is the Ordnance Survey Letters, the remarkable series of field notebooks compiled in the 1830s by scholars working alongside the survey teams, which refer to the discovery of human bones at this location. The Ordnance Survey Letters are a rich source for early Irish topography and folklore, recording place names, antiquities, and local knowledge that might otherwise have gone unwritten. Together, the map and the letters confirm that this was once a recognised burial place, even if its origins, period, and character remain unclear. Quarrying in the immediate area, both historical and more recent small-scale activity, is the most likely explanation for why so little has survived.

The site sits in ordinary farmland, and a visitor should not expect any visible earthwork or marker. The interest here is of a particular kind: a place recorded, named, and then gradually erased, surviving only in an archive entry and on the surface of a nineteenth-century map. Those drawn to this sort of absence, to the gap between what was documented and what remains, might find something worth considering in the view from that south-facing slope, even if the ground itself keeps nothing back.
