Burial ground, Moneen, Co. Cork

A field in Moneen, County Cork holds a peculiar double identity.

The nineteenth-century Ordnance Survey recorded it as both a burial ground and a "Danish Fort", a pairing that tells us as much about how earlier generations interpreted the landscape as it does about what may actually lie beneath the grass.

When the OS six-inch map was surveyed in 1842, the site appeared as a pentagonal hachured area, the conventional symbol for an earthwork of some kind. The "Danish Fort" label was a common shorthand used by OS Name Book compilers for prehistoric or early medieval enclosures whose true origins were unclear; in Irish folk understanding, anything ancient and unexplained was frequently attributed to the Danes. The site has since been levelled, most likely through agricultural activity over successive generations, though low undulations survive to the south and south-west, the kind of gentle ridges in pasture that only catch the eye at the right angle of low winter light. More intriguing still is a local tradition of a souterrain associated with the site. A souterrain is an underground stone-built passage or chamber, typically constructed during the early medieval period and often found in association with ringforts; they were used variously for storage, refuge, or both. Whether any such structure survives intact beneath the field at Moneen is not recorded, but its place in local memory suggests the ground here was long understood to hold something out of the ordinary.
