Burial ground, Skagh, Co. Cork

In a field in north Cork known locally as Páirc na Cille, the field of the church, dozens of headstones barely six inches above the ground mark out a burial ground that has absorbed centuries of grief.

The stones are low enough to be easily missed, and the area is now densely overgrown and effectively inaccessible, which gives the place a quality of slow disappearance, a site that the land is quietly reclaiming.

The plot, roughly circular and measuring about thirty-six yards in diameter, appears on Ordnance Survey maps as far back as 1842, shown as an irregular field with the road to the north curving respectfully around it rather than cutting through. A 1937 map also marks the site of a church within the enclosure, suggesting the burial ground grew up alongside an earlier ecclesiastical foundation, now also gone. Writing in 1934, a researcher named Bowman recorded the field name and noted local tradition that a priest was buried somewhere within the plot, though the precise location was already uncertain by then. The surrounding fence had already been partially levelled at that point. What gives the site its particular weight is the layering of its dead. Local memory held that it served as a famine burial ground, and also as the resting place of soldiers killed in what tradition called a Cromwellian battle at nearby Cullen, a skirmish that left no detailed written record but whose dead apparently found their way here. The ground continued to receive burials up to around 1900, meaning it was in use for at least three centuries and possibly far longer if the church association is taken into account.
