Burial ground, Taur More, Co. Cork

On a south-west-facing slope in the Taur More area of north Cork, there is a low, sub-oval depression in the rough grazing land that local tradition insists holds the dead from a battle fought long ago.

No graves are visible at the surface, and the site went entirely unrecorded on Ordnance Survey maps of 1842 and 1904. It appeared only on the 1936 six-inch map, marked out by a broken line, which itself suggests that surveyors were working from local knowledge rather than from any physical evidence they could confidently trace.

The main depression measures roughly 27 by 19 metres, sunk to a depth of about 0.7 metres, and contains numerous interior mounds. A smaller, narrower depression, around 13.5 by 3.5 metres, lies a little over 8 metres to the north-east. Writing in 1934, a researcher named Bowman recorded that there was already no sign of graves remaining, and that the site's identity rested entirely on an oral tradition: a battle had been fought at Taur, and the fallen had been buried here. The original battlefield burial ground of this type, sometimes called a cillín in Irish contexts though the term usually refers to unconsecrated infant burial grounds, occupies an ambiguous category, somewhere between folk memory, landscape feature, and unverified historical event. Without excavation, the mounds and depressions cannot be assigned a date or a conflict, and it is entirely possible that what the landscape records is something older, or something else entirely.
