Burial, Monkstown Castlefarm, Co. Dublin

When builders broke ground on a new dwelling house in the Castlefarm area of Monkstown in November 1968, they uncovered something that brought the work to an abrupt halt.

Portions of skulls and long bones began appearing in the walls of the foundation trenches, at depths ranging from roughly 30 to 60 centimetres below the surface, close enough to the modern ground level to make the discovery all the more unexpected.

The remains appeared to be extended burials, meaning the bodies had been laid out flat rather than crouched or flexed, and there were indications that some burials overlay others, suggesting the site had been used for interment on more than one occasion. No associated artefacts were recovered alongside any of the skeletal material, which makes formal dating or cultural attribution difficult. The absence of grave goods means there is no obvious route to connecting the burials to a particular period or tradition, though extended burial rites are commonly associated with early Christian practice in Ireland. The site lies between Fitzgerald Park and Mountown Road Lower, a part of suburban south County Dublin that carries few obvious surface traces of its earlier history. The discovery was recorded by Cahill and Sikora in 2011.

There is nothing visible at the location today. The dwelling house that prompted the original discovery was built, and the area is fully developed residential ground. The value of this particular record lies less in what a visitor might see and more in what it suggests about the layered occupation of land that now reads as ordinary suburban Dublin. For anyone walking between Fitzgerald Park and Mountown Road Lower, the unremarkable streetscape carries, quite literally beneath it, the unresolved question of who was buried here, and why this spot was chosen more than once.
