Burial, Treanagh, Co. Mayo

In the south-east corner of a pasture field in County Mayo, amid undulating grassland and patches of bog, a low rise in the ground holds human remains that have been uncovered, reburied, exposed again, and reburied once more.

The mound is unassuming enough that a visitor walking through the field would likely notice nothing at all. That ordinariness is itself part of what makes the place quietly arresting.

The first disturbance came in the early 1950s, when the rise was quarried for building sand to construct the farmhouse that still stands immediately to the south. Work stopped when human bones came to light, and the remains were reinterred. Decades later, after farm stock had gradually eroded the exposed section face left by the quarrying, bones surfaced again. What emerged the second time was specific and affecting: a fragmentary skull, an intact jawbone retaining a full set of teeth, and several long bones. More suggestive still, clusters of stones were visible protruding through the sod on top of the mound, their arrangement said to resemble the outlines of individual graves. The bones were again reburied, this time by levelling the exposed face and grading down the mound itself. No bones or other surface evidence of burials remain visible today. Whether the mound is a natural feature that was used for burial, or a burial mound in the more deliberate archaeological sense, has not been formally determined. The age of the remains and the number of individuals interred are likewise unknown.
