Burnt mound, Ardgroom Outward, Co. Cork

On the lower slopes of Tooreennamna Mountain in west Cork, a low grass-covered mound sits quietly beside a stream, looking at first glance like little more than a slight rise in rough pasture.

Where the water has gradually eaten into the bank, though, it has exposed what lies beneath: a layer of heat-shattered stones mixed with charcoal-enriched soil, the unmistakable signature of prehistoric cooking activity. The mound measures roughly 7.4 metres east to west, with a straight western side running 9.3 metres north to south, giving it a distinctive D-shape. It stands only about 0.4 metres high, modest enough to be easily overlooked.

This is a burnt mound, a type of site found widely across Ireland and Britain and most commonly associated with the Bronze Age, though some examples are older or later. The working interpretation is that such mounds accumulated beside a trough or pit into which water was poured and heated by dropping fire-cracked stones directly into it. The stones, once too fractured to retain heat effectively, were discarded to form the characteristic crescent or D-shaped heaps that survive today. Whether these sites were primarily for cooking, bathing, textile processing, or some combination of purposes is still debated. What is clear is that this particular mound was not used in isolation. A fulacht fia, the Irish term for this class of burnt mound, lies about 120 metres to the east, suggesting repeated or concurrent use of this stretch of streamside ground. Fifteen metres to the south-west sits a cashel, a stone-walled enclosure of the kind typically associated with early medieval settlement in Ireland, pointing to a landscape that was in active use across multiple periods.
