Burnt mound, Cargagh, Co. Cavan

Three burnt mounds turning up within roughly 1.25 hectares is the kind of density that makes archaeologists pause.

At the bottom of a steep east-facing slope in Cargagh, County Cavan, one of these features, a spread of charcoal-enriched soil and heat-affected stones measuring 3.4 metres east to west and 2.4 metres north to south, sits alongside two companion mounds located about 20 metres to the south-southwest. Burnt mounds are among the most common prehistoric monument types in Ireland, typically formed by repeated cycles of heating stones in fire, plunging them into water-filled troughs to generate steam or hot water, and then discarding the cracked, fire-reddened stones in a spreading heap nearby. Their precise purpose is still debated, with cooking, bathing, textile processing, and hide preparation all proposed as possibilities, but their clustering near water sources and low-lying ground is consistent and well-documented across the island.

The site came to light during archaeological testing carried out in 2022 by T. McHugh of Fadó Archaeology, ahead of a proposed development that would have used the area for soil storage. The testing licence, numbered 22E0863, was what revealed that this corner of Cavan held not one but three separate mound features in close proximity. That concentration suggests the location was returned to repeatedly, perhaps over generations, by people who found the slope and its associated ground conditions useful for whatever activity the mounds represent. Rather than being excavated and recorded in the conventional sense, all three features are to be preserved in situ, sealed beneath a geotextile layer and a covering of introduced soil, which means the archaeology remains intact underground, protected from the development above it.
