Burnt mound, Clooncorban, Co. Cork

In a level field in Clooncorban, Co. Cork, a low spread of cracked stones and darkened earth sits quietly on the southern bank of a stream.

It is roughly fifteen metres across and twelve metres wide, irregular in outline, and easy to walk past without a second thought. What it represents, however, is a form of prehistoric activity found all across Ireland and Britain, and one that archaeologists are still debating.

Burnt mounds, known in Irish archaeology as fulachta fiadh, are among the most common prehistoric monument types in Ireland, yet their purpose remains genuinely contested. The typical theory holds that they were outdoor cooking sites, where stones were heated in a fire, dropped into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil, and used to cook meat. The heat-shattered stones, cracked by repeated thermal shock, were then discarded in a mound nearby. This explains both the characteristic fractured stone and the charcoal-enriched soil found at Clooncorban. The location beside a stream is also entirely typical, since a reliable water source was essential to the process. Other theories have suggested these sites were used for bathing, textile processing, or brewing, and it is possible different sites served different purposes at different times. The Clooncorban example is not an isolated case even locally; another possible burnt mound lies roughly 150 metres to the east, which hints at repeated or prolonged use of the area during prehistory, most likely somewhere in the Bronze Age, when these features were most commonly created in Ireland.
