Burnt mound, Curraheen, Co. Cork

Road construction has a way of turning up things nobody was looking for.

When archaeological monitors moved ahead of the building of the N22 Ballincollig Bypass near Curraheen in County Cork, they found something small but telling: an oval spread of heat-shattered stones and charcoal-darkened soil, measuring roughly 2.4 metres by 1.67 metres and barely a quarter of a metre deep. Unremarkable to look at, perhaps, but immediately recognisable to anyone familiar with prehistoric Irish landscapes.

The feature, excavated in 2002, belongs to a category of monument known as a fulacht fia, a term used for the mounds of fire-cracked stone and burnt material that accumulated around ancient cooking or heating sites. The typical method involved heating stones in a fire and dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil; repeated use left behind the distinctive spreads of shattered, blackened stone that survive in the ground for thousands of years. What makes Curraheen particularly interesting is that this was not an isolated find. Five further fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds were identified in the same area during the same works. Two of the closest neighbours sat within roughly twenty metres, one to the northwest and one to the southwest. Finding six such features clustered so tightly together suggests this stretch of ground saw repeated or sustained activity over time, rather than a single episode of use. The concentration points to a landscape that was genuinely busy in prehistory, even if the nature of that activity, whether cooking, bathing, textile processing, or something else entirely, is still debated among archaeologists.
