Burnt mound, Lickane, Co. Cork

In a low-lying pasture near Lickane in County Cork, a modest patch of ground holds traces of an ancient technology so widespread across Ireland that archaeologists have a dedicated term for its remains: the burnt mound.

These sites, known in Irish as fulacht fiadh, consist of crescent or horseshoe-shaped mounds of heat-shattered stone and blackened, charcoal-rich soil, the debris left behind after repeated cycles of heating stones in fire and plunging them into water-filled troughs. The process boiled the water efficiently, and though debate continues about whether these sites were primarily used for cooking, bathing, or textile processing, their sheer numbers across the Irish landscape speak to a practice that was deeply routine in prehistoric life.

This particular spread was recorded in 1994 by Ó Loingsigh, who noted a deposit measuring roughly 12.5 metres north to south and 8 metres east to west, sitting close to a stream on its eastern bank, exactly the kind of water-adjacent, low-lying position typical of burnt mounds across Ireland. When surveyors returned to the site in 2002, the spread could not be located at all; the field had grown over with high grass, and the mound simply disappeared beneath it. That quiet erasure is part of what makes the site interesting. It is not dramatic or well-defined, but provisional, a feature that slips in and out of visibility depending on the season and the height of the vegetation. A second possible burnt mound lies just 25 metres to the north, and around 150 metres to the south sits a rath, a circular earthwork enclosure typically associated with early medieval settlement. That cluster of features across a small area suggests this stretch of ground saw sustained human activity across a considerable span of time.
