Burnt mound, Lisheen, Co. Clare

At Lisheen in County Clare, there is a burnt mound, a class of monument so common across the Irish landscape that archaeologists sometimes joke it is impossible to dig a field without finding one, yet so poorly understood that its purpose has been debated for generations.

These are low, crescent-shaped or kidney-shaped mounds of fire-cracked stone and charred earth, typically found close to a water source. They are the accumulated waste of repeated heating, the debris of stones that were placed in fire and then plunged into water-filled troughs, presumably to bring the water to a boil. What was being boiled, and why, remains genuinely contested.

Burnt mounds belong broadly to the Bronze Age, though some span into the Iron Age, and they appear in their thousands across Ireland, Britain, and Scandinavia. The prevailing theory for most of the twentieth century was that they were cooking sites, a kind of prehistoric field kitchen. More recently, scholars have suggested uses ranging from hide-processing and textile dyeing to sweat-house bathing. The Irish term fulacht fiadh, sometimes applied to these sites, translates loosely as a cooking place of the wild, though the label is not universally accepted as accurate or consistent. The Lisheen example in Clare sits within a county that has yielded a considerable number of such monuments, distributed across its lowland bogs and river margins where the necessary combination of water, fuel, and flat ground made these activities practical.

Beyond its classification and location, detailed information specific to this particular mound is not currently available, which itself says something about how quietly these monuments sit in the landscape, recorded but not yet fully examined.
