Burnt mound, Mountnagle, Co. Cork

In a field at Mountnagle in County Cork, a roughly square patch of ground, some twenty-six metres across in each direction, has been fenced off from the surrounding pasture with posts and wire.

The land around it has been planted with young deciduous trees, but this enclosure has been left bare, distinguished from its neighbours by nothing more obvious than unusually thick tufts of grass. Underneath that grass lies something considerably older: heat-shattered stones and soil darkened with charcoal, the characteristic signature of a burnt mound.

Burnt mounds, known in Irish archaeology as fulachtaí fia, are among the most common prehistoric monument types in Ireland, though their precise function remains debated. The leading theory holds that they were used for cooking, most likely by heating stones in a fire and then dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil. The stones, unable to withstand repeated thermal shock, fracture and shatter, and over time accumulate into the distinctive mounded spreads of fire-cracked material that archaeologists identify today. The Mountnagle example was brought to attention through a personal communication from John Roche, and the site was recorded as part of the Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. When the soil was examined, black earth and burnt stones were confirmed, though thick grass cover made a full assessment difficult and the total extent of the spread was not established.

The site sits in what was level rough grazing land, a setting typical of burnt mounds across Ireland, which are frequently found near low-lying, waterlogged ground. The fencing around the Mountnagle example suggests some effort has been made to protect it from disturbance by livestock or planting, but with the spread of the deposit still unmeasured, much about this particular site remains quietly unresolved.
