Burnt mound, Rathslevin, Co. Mayo

In a damp, rush-grown field in County Mayo, a low grassy hump sits beside a stream, looking for all the world like an unremarkable rise in the ground.

It is, in fact, the accumulated debris of repeated prehistoric cooking or industrial activity, a burnt mound, the type of site that appears in extraordinary numbers across Ireland and yet rarely draws a second glance. What gives this one away, where the field drain cuts into its northern edge, is a cross-section of heat-shattered sandstone fragments locked into dark, charcoal-rich soil, the compacted residue of stones that were heated in fire and plunged into water, probably thousands of years ago.

Burnt mounds are among the most common prehistoric monument types in Ireland, typically dating to the Bronze Age, though the precise function of any individual example is rarely certain. The leading theory is that they served as cooking places, where heated stones were used to boil water in a trough, but some researchers have proposed uses ranging from saunas to light industrial processes. This particular mound is oblong in shape, measuring roughly nine and a half metres east to west and four metres north to south, and rises only about thirty centimetres above the surrounding pasture. The field drain that runs along its northern side has clipped it, but that truncation is also what makes the interior visible, exposing the friable, fire-cracked stone that would otherwise remain entirely hidden beneath the sod. A second burnt mound of the same type lies approximately fifty metres to the south-south-east, suggesting this stretch of low-lying ground beside the stream was used repeatedly, or perhaps simultaneously, for whatever activity these sites represent.
