Burnt mound, Turnaspidogy, Co. Cork

Sitting in a shallow east-west hollow in County Cork, sheltered by rocky ridges to the north and south, a low circular mound of cracked stone and charcoal-dark soil marks the site of what was once a considerably larger feature.

Measuring only about six metres across and barely fifteen centimetres high today, it survives in diminished form because, according to local knowledge, material from the original mound was spread across the surrounding pasture over time, dispersing the evidence but not quite erasing it.

The mound is what archaeologists classify as a burnt mound, a type of prehistoric site found across Ireland and Britain in considerable numbers. The basic principle behind these features is fairly well understood: stones were heated in a fire, then dropped into a water-filled trough to bring the water to a boil, and the heat-shattered, fire-cracked stones were discarded in a heap nearby. This repeated process is what creates the distinctive mounds of fractured rock and charcoal-enriched earth that survive in the landscape. What the activity was actually for, whether cooking, bathing, textile processing, or something else entirely, remains a matter of ongoing discussion among archaeologists. What makes this particular spot quietly notable is the presence, roughly twenty metres to the east, of a fulacht fia, the Irish term for the associated cooking or heating site itself, typically consisting of the trough and hearth area around which the work was done. The two features together suggest a place of some sustained prehistoric use, tucked into a natural shelter in the Cork countryside and largely overlooked by the modern world.
