Cairn, Ballagh, Co. Kerry

On the summit of Carran Mountain in south-west Kerry, sitting on an exposed spur of rock amid open pasture, there is a cairn that has been slowly losing itself to the hillside for a very long time.

Stones have been lifted away over the centuries, and others have simply rolled southward down the slope, leaving the surface uneven and the structure visibly diminished. At its centre, someone has built a small modern cairn, a loose echo of whatever larger purpose the original once served.

The cairn measures roughly 13.5 metres north to south and 12 metres east to west, rising to about two metres in height. It is composed of stones of various shapes and sizes, the typical character of a field-gathered or hillside-quarried construction. Cairns of this kind are generally prehistoric in origin, raised over burial deposits or as territorial markers on high ground, though without excavation it is rarely possible to say which function any individual example served. What is clear here is that the structure has been interfered with repeatedly, whether by people robbing stone for field walls or farm buildings, or simply by the slow logic of gravity on a mountain slope. The rough circularity of the plan is still readable despite the losses, and the overall scale suggests this was a deliberate and substantial undertaking by whoever built it.
