Its south-western side has been dug away, and local knowledge confirms why: the stones were carted off to surface nearby lanes. The result is a cairn that now reads as oblong rather than the roughly circular shape it almost certainly once held, measuring approximately 17 metres along its north-west to south-east axis and 9 metres across, rising to about 2.1 metres at its highest point. What makes it worth attention is precisely this slow dismantling, and what that partial quarrying has obscured.

A clearance cairn is the most mundane explanation for a pile of stones in a field: farmers clearing ground for cultivation or grazing would heap up removed rocks, sometimes over generations, until the accumulation became substantial. But this mound is too large and too solitary to fit that explanation comfortably. None of the neighbouring fields contain comparable heaps, which is the pattern you would expect if systematic field clearance were the cause. The scale, combined with the evidence that the original form was considerably more impressive before the lane-builders got to work, points instead towards a prehistoric burial cairn. Such monuments, built to mark and contain the remains of the dead, were a feature of the Irish landscape from the Neolithic period onward, and they were frequently sited on elevated ground with broad views. From this slope, the prospect extends out towards Wicklow Head and the sea beyond, a placement that feels deliberate rather than incidental.
