Cairn, Derroura, Co. Galway

At just over a thousand feet above sea level on the summit of Keeraunnageeragh in west Galway, there is a pile of granite stones that has been accumulating questions for far longer than it has been accumulating answers.

The cairn, an oval mound built from small granite stones and measuring roughly 19.7 metres along its northeast to southwest axis and standing 3.2 metres high, is the kind of structure that announces itself against the skyline before you can quite make sense of it. Cairns of this type are generally understood to be prehistoric funerary monuments, raised over burials or used to mark significant points in the landscape, though the specific purpose of any individual example is rarely straightforward to establish.

The monument has not survived entirely intact. There is noticeable disturbance along the northeast side and at the centre, where a depression suggests that someone, at some point, dug into it. This is not unusual. Cairns across Ireland were frequently robbed for building material, investigated by early antiquarians with more enthusiasm than method, or simply disturbed by centuries of exposure on open hilltops. References to this particular site appear in works associated with Lord Killanin, cited in 1947 and again in a 1967 guide to Irish monuments co-authored with Michael V. Duignan, suggesting it was at least known to those cataloguing the archaeology of the west of Ireland through the mid-twentieth century. Beyond those notices, the cairn sits in its elevated position largely without elaboration, its origins and original contents unrecorded.
