Cairn, Meenalooban, Co. Donegal

In the rolling hills of Meenalooban, County Donegal, stands an unclassified cairn that remains something of a mystery to archaeologists.

Like many of Ireland's ancient monuments, this stone mound has yet to be fully documented by the Archaeological Survey of Ireland, leaving its exact age, purpose, and origins open to speculation. Cairns like this one dot the Irish landscape and were typically built as burial monuments during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, though some served as territorial markers or commemorative structures.
