Cairn, Moygowna, Co. Clare

On the summit edge of an east-west ridge in Moygowna, County Clare, there sits a low moss-covered mound so modest that it barely registers as a feature of the landscape at all.

Measuring roughly four metres north to south and just over four metres east to west, and rising only about sixty centimetres from the surrounding ground, it occupies a position with wide views in every direction, set within rough pasture that forms part of an extensive field system. What makes it quietly interesting is precisely its ambiguity: the mound may be a cairn in the older, prehistoric sense, a deliberate monument of heaped stone, or it may be something altogether more functional and unremarkable.

The qualifying note attached to this site, that it is possibly a field-clearance cairn, matters more than it might initially seem. Across Ireland, generations of farmers working stony ground would gather loose surface rocks and pile them at the margins of fields simply to make cultivation easier. These clearance cairns can be found wherever the underlying geology pushed stones upward through thin soils, and they often cluster near field boundaries or at the edges of higher ground. At Moygowna, the ridge-top location and the presence of surrounding field systems make this explanation entirely plausible. And yet the elevated position, the wide visibility, and the careful noting of the site alongside other recorded monuments in the area leave open the possibility that the mound has older significance. Without excavation, the two possibilities sit unresolved beside each other, which is rather the honest condition of a great many small stone features in the Irish upland landscape.
