Cairn, Mullach Bhéal, Co. Kerry

Beside an ancient mountain trackway on the Dingle Peninsula sits an oval mound of stones known as Folach na Marbh, a name that translates roughly as "hiding place of the dead.

" The cairn, measuring roughly 6.5 metres by 6.2 metres and standing about 1.5 metres high, is not a prehistoric monument in the conventional archaeological sense so much as a living, accumulating act of memory. Anyone who passes adds a stone, and the custom has continued long enough that the mound has become a feature of the landscape in its own right.

The cairn sits along the old trackway running from Glin North to Mullaghveal, a mountain route that predates the modern road network of the peninsula. Local tradition holds that it marks the spot where someone died, though the identity of that person has been lost. The name and the practice were recorded by An Seabhac, the pen name of the writer and Irish-language activist Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha, in 1939. The custom of adding a stone to a cairn at a place of death or significance is an old one in Ireland and elsewhere in the Gaelic world, a small gesture that acknowledges the place without requiring any formal commemoration. Over time, those individual gestures accumulate into something substantial.

The trackway itself is the key to finding it. The route between Glin North and Mullaghveal follows older patterns of movement across the Kerry mountains, and the cairn sits as a waypoint along that path rather than at any road-accessible destination. Anyone who comes across it on foot is simply following the same line that travellers have used for generations, which gives the place a quiet continuity that more formally marked sites sometimes lack.
