Cairn, Ráith, Gleann Eala, Co. Donegal

In the townland of Gleann Eala in County Donegal sits an unclassified cairn, a stone monument that remains something of a mystery to archaeologists.

Like many of Ireland's prehistoric monuments, this cairn holds its secrets close, waiting for further investigation to reveal its purpose and origins.

Cairns like the one at Gleann Eala are found throughout Ireland and typically date from the Bronze Age through to the early medieval period. These carefully constructed stone mounds served various purposes; some marked burial sites of important individuals, others commemorated significant events, and some may have served as territorial markers. Until more detailed archaeological work is carried out at this Donegal site, its exact age, function and cultural significance remain tantalisingly unclear.
