Cairn, Scalp, Co. Wicklow

Near the western edge of Scalp mountain's summit in County Wicklow, a broad ring of stones sits quietly out of alignment with the surrounding landscape, commanding views that sweep from the north-west around to the south.

What makes it worth a second look is less its presence than its condition: the cairn, a type of ancient burial or ceremonial mound constructed from heaped stone rather than earth, measures twenty-two metres in diameter and still rises between one and two and a half metres in height, yet its upper levels have been considerably worn away over what are likely millennia of exposure and disturbance. Two large stone slabs lie displaced within the structure, one near the centre and one towards the western edge. Whether they were once roofstones covering a burial chamber, or simply load-bearing structural elements within the cairn's body, is not fully resolved.

Cairns of this type are generally associated with prehistoric funerary traditions, most commonly the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, when upland sites with wide prospects were favoured for monument construction. The precise origins of this particular cairn are not recorded, and no excavation findings appear to be associated with it, which leaves the displaced slabs as the most tangible clue to whatever internal arrangement once existed. The setting on a marked slope at the summit's western margin, rather than at its highest point, is itself a detail worth noting: the builders appear to have chosen position and outlook as carefully as elevation.
