Cairn – wayside cairn, Laghtanabba, Co. Galway

Along the road between Clifden and Cleggan in Connemara, close to the western bank of the Abhainn Leacht an Aba, there is a place that exists now only as a name.

No stones remain, no mound rises from the ground, no visible surface trace survives of what was once a wayside cairn, the kind of modest roadside heap of stones that travellers would traditionally add to as they passed, often marking a spot associated with a death, a boundary, or a local act of remembrance.

What makes Laghtanabba quietly interesting is precisely the gap between its presence in the historical record and its absence on the ground. The first edition of the Ordnance Survey mapped this stretch of Connemara but recorded the cairn in name only, without any symbol to indicate a physical feature. By the time the second edition was published in 1898, both the name and a cartographic marking had been added, suggesting that surveyors by then recognised something worth indicating. The placename itself carries weight: "lacht" or "leacht" in Irish refers to a cairn or memorial heap of stones, and that same word appears in the river name nearby, Abhainn Leacht an Aba, meaning roughly the river of the abbot's cairn. The landscape, in other words, has been quietly annotating its own history for centuries, even as the physical object at the centre of it has vanished entirely.

There is nothing to see here in the conventional sense, and that is rather the point. The eastern verge of the Clifden to Cleggan road at this spot holds only grass and whatever the Connemara weather is doing that day. The cairn is gone, but the name persists in the river, on old maps, and in the townland itself.
