Campbell’s fort, Drumboory, Co. Monaghan

On the summit of a low knoll in Drumboory, County Monaghan, a grass-covered ring sits quietly in the landscape, labelled on two successive Ordnance Survey maps, those of 1834 and 1907, as Campbell's Fort, the name rendered in the gothic lettering cartographers traditionally reserved for antiquities.

The name itself is intriguing. It suggests a personal association, perhaps a local family or landowner whose identity has since dissolved into the Monaghan countryside, leaving only the earthwork and the designation behind.

What survives is a roughly circular enclosure, approximately 53 metres across at its widest, defined by an earthen bank and an outer fosse, which is simply a defensive ditch dug around the perimeter. On the southern side the bank is still substantial, nearly two and a half metres in external height, with the fosse alongside it retaining a measurable depth. On the northern side the character of the monument changes: there the outer ditch has largely silted or eroded away, leaving only a low scarp and a flat berm, a narrow level terrace, to indicate where it once ran. Along the eastern and south-south-western arc, the old bank has been absorbed into a working field boundary, hedge and all, which is how a great many such earthworks survive in Irish farmland, folded into the practical geometry of later agriculture. A slight dip in the perimeter at the north-west may mark the original entrance, though it reads as little more than a subtle interruption in the grass line. Whether this is a ringfort, a later enclosure, or something else entirely, the available evidence does not firmly settle.
