Fortified Houses

Castletown, Coolbaun, Co. Tipperary

A fortified house that has never stopped being a house is a rarer thing than it sounds.

Many of Ireland's tower houses and defended dwellings were abandoned centuries ago, left to sheep and ivy, but this one, overlooking Lough Derg from a low rise of ground, has remained in continuous domestic use since around 1600, its family accommodation quietly updated generation after generation rather than allowed to fall into picturesque ruin.

The building began life under the name Castle Cambie, a four-storey rectangular block built for defence as much as comfort, its roofline still finished with crenellated battlements behind pitched slate roofs, a detail that recalls the castellated parapets of medieval fortification long after the practical need for them had passed. Loops (narrow openings once used for observation or defence rather than light) survive in the earlier fabric, a reminder of the building's original defensive purpose. Around 1820 a two-storey wing was added onto the southeast side, joined to the older block by a three-storey link that now contains the main doorway, itself a pointed arch fitted with a timber battened door. The Victorians left their mark too: in the later nineteenth century the interior and some window openings were altered, though the roughcast rendered walls and much of the seventeenth-century structure remain legible beneath these changes. The windows themselves form a small chronicle of taste across two centuries, timber sliding sashes ranging from six-over-six pane at ground level to eight-over-eight on the second floor, with double round-headed sashes and a segmental-headed triple sash lighting the gable of the later block.

Around the house, a walled garden and a boundary wall to the south may be as old as the original building, and cut-stone gate piers, one gateway finished with castellated coping and the other with a stile, still mark the approach through random stone walls. Stone outbuildings to the southeast, one pierced by carriage arches, complete a working group of structures that grew up alongside the house rather than being planned in a single campaign, evidence of a household adapting its surroundings across four hundred years rather than freezing them at any one moment.
