Catholic Church (in ruins), Cleristown, Co. Wexford

By 1839, when the Ordnance Survey cartographers were mapping County Wexford at six inches to the mile, a small Catholic chapel at Cleristown was already gone enough to earn the label "R.

C. Chapel in ruins" on their finished sheet. What makes this quietly odd is that the map still shows it as a roofed, rectangular structure, roughly twenty metres east to west and ten metres north to south, suggesting the surveyors recorded a building in the process of dissolution rather than one already fully collapsed. Today, nothing whatsoever remains at ground level: no wall stump, no enclosure, no trace of a burial ground. The site exists now only as a coordinate on a south-facing slope beside a farm lane.

The chapel's origins are uncertain, and the uncertainty itself is revealing. It may have been a penal or post-penal Catholic church, the kind of modest, often deliberately inconspicuous building that Catholics across Ireland constructed during and after the Penal Laws, a period when public Catholic worship was severely restricted and churches were frequently built in marginal or hidden locations. If so, it was probably superseded when a larger cruciform church was raised roughly 650 metres to the north, a building that appears as extant on the same 1839 map, suggesting the older chapel was already falling into disuse at precisely the moment the surveyors arrived. Alternatively, given how close the site sits to the Cleristown castle earthworks, barely ten metres to the north, it may never have served a general congregation at all, functioning instead as a private chapel attached to the castle. Either reading places it in a recognisable Irish pattern: small, practical, and discarded once something more permanent came along.
