Catholic Church, Kilconierin, Co. Galway

At some point between its construction as a place of worship and the present day, a Catholic church in Kilconierin, County Galway, was put to a rather different kind of use: sheltering cattle.

The building, a modest structure of roughly eighteen metres east to west and seven metres north to south, sits roofless within the south-east sector of a graveyard that also contains the remains of a separate medieval church to the north-east. Despite the loss of its roof, the walls still stand to their original height, which lends the ruin an odd quality of completeness, a shell that looks almost intact from certain angles while being entirely open to the sky.

The church dates from the nineteenth or early twentieth century, placing its construction in the period when Catholic communities across Ireland were finally building substantial places of worship after the relaxation of the Penal Laws. That a building erected for that purpose should later have served as a cattle byre is a particular kind of deflation, though not an uncommon fate for rural structures once a congregation moved on or a newer building replaced them. The south wall retains some of its more considered architectural detail: a pointed arched doorway flanked by a pointed arched window on either side. The east and west ends are now heavily overgrown, which partly explains why the south elevation remains the most legible part of the building.

The graveyard setting adds another layer of time to the site, with the medieval church remains nearby serving as a reminder that this particular patch of ground has been used for burial and worship across several centuries. Visitors moving between the two structures are effectively crossing a considerable span of Irish ecclesiastical history within a very small area of ground.
