Churches & Chapels
Shoodaun is a small townland in County Galway, and the Catholic church recorded there is one of those quietly catalogued places that the formal record has yet to fully illuminate.
It appears in the monument listings, noted and counted, but the details that would normally follow, the dates, the dedications, the architectural particulars, remain unconfirmed from available sources. That absence is itself a kind of character. Rural Catholic churches of this type, often built in the nineteenth century during a period of intense church construction following Catholic Emancipation in 1829, were frequently modest structures raised by local subscription, sometimes replacing earlier mass houses or outdoor mass rocks where congregations had gathered during the Penal era, when Catholic worship was formally suppressed. Whether this building follows that pattern is not something the current record confirms.
