Caves & Shelters
County Clare sits atop one of the most extensively karstified landscapes in Ireland, where centuries of rainwater working through carboniferous limestone have produced a labyrinth of caves, sinkholes, and underground rivers.
Poulbaun, whose name derives from the Irish "poll bán", meaning white hole or pale hollow, is one of the named cave sites recorded within this landscape. The naming tradition alone hints at something worth paying attention to; caves in this part of Ireland were rarely anonymous, and the ones that earned placenames tended to be conspicuous, locally significant, or associated with folklore and practical use.
