Cave, Rathredmond, Co. Mayo

Settlement Sites
In the townland of Rathredmond, in County Mayo, there is a cave considered significant enough to be recorded as an archaeological monument.
That fact alone raises questions. Mayo's landscape is shaped largely by limestone karst in its southern reaches and by bog and drumlin elsewhere, and caves within it range from modest natural fissures to features associated with human activity stretching back thousands of years. Whether this particular cavity was used for shelter, burial, ritual, or simply noted as a local landmark, is not currently known from publicly available sources. It sits on the record, named and located, but otherwise silent.
