Cemetery, Youghalvillage, Co. Tipperary

A handball alley tucked into the western corner of a medieval graveyard is not something you encounter every day, yet that is precisely what occupies part of this hilltop burial ground in County Tipperary.

The graveyard at Youghalvillage sits on the crest of a hill, its sub-rectangular enclosure, measuring roughly 54 metres north to south and 49 metres east to west, bounded by a stone wall with an entrance gate and a stile on the western side. Alongside the 18th and 19th century memorials, and the handball alley, a blocked doorway into a mausoleum can still be made out in the external face of the southern wall, hinting at layers of use and adaptation that stretch well beyond the graveyard's more obvious antiquity.

At the northern end of the enclosure stand the ruins of St. Conlan's medieval parish church. The church was already a going concern by the mid-17th century when it was documented in the Civil Survey of Tipperary, conducted between 1654 and 1656, which noted that on the lands of Youghal, then spelled 'Youghill', stood the Church of Youghill Parish. The same survey recorded that in 1640 the Vicar of the Parish of Youghal held one acre of glebeland, a small plot of land attached to a church living for the support of its clergy, lying to the north of the church. It was valued at five shillings per annum but was described, with some candour, as being fenced about with a ditch and 'totally waste'. Some 370 metres to the north-east, the associated St. Conlan's Well and holy tree complete the cluster of early ecclesiastical features in the area, suggesting this hillside had considerable religious significance long before the Civil Survey put it on paper.
