Chapel Railway Station, Chapel Village, Co. Wexford

The building has clearly had an eventful life since 1884: occupied through the turn of the century, damaged by fire in 1923, and closed to traffic in 1963. That it still presents such a coherent, legible composition, both outside and in, says something about the quality of the original construction and the care taken since.

The station belongs to the later phase of railway building in County Wexford, when the Waterford, New Ross and Wexford Junction Railway line was being extended and improved under the stewardship of the Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway Company. It is a modest, single-storey structure on a rectangular plan, four or five bays to the front and five to the rear, with a pitched slate roof finished in terracotta ridge tiles and rendered chimney stacks whose corbelled stringcourses step up to tapered terracotta pots. The walls are rendered, ruled and lined in imitation of stonework, a common finish for buildings wanting a slightly more formal appearance than plain render would give. Windows are two-over-two timber sashes set behind cut-granite sills, and the door retains its timber boarding beneath concealed dressings. Census records place named station masters here in both 1901 and 1911, Joseph Cushen and Thomas Cushen respectively, ordinary details that nonetheless anchor the building to the working lives that passed through it before closure in 1963 brought that chapter to an end.

Diagonally across from the station stands a barrel-roofed goods store, its curved roofline a distinctive counterpoint to the station's pitched gables. Together the two buildings form a self-contained group that still reads clearly in the rural street scene, the kind of paired station-and-store arrangement that once dotted branch lines across the country but which rarely survives with both elements intact and legible as a set.
