Children’s burial ground, Baile An Bhaoithín, Co. Kerry

On the south-eastern slope of Croaghmarhin, on the Dingle Peninsula, a circular enclosure holds a cluster of low, stony mounds.

They barely rise above the ground, none reaching more than a quarter of a metre in height, and they are laced through with quartz. These are the graves of a calluragh, the Irish term for an unconsecrated burial ground used, from early Christian times well into the modern era, for children who died before baptism. Catholic doctrine long held that such infants could not be buried in consecrated ground, and so families turned instead to older, liminal places, often prehistoric enclosures or early monastic sites, to inter their dead quietly and without ceremony.

The site, known as Calluragh burial ground or An Raingiléis, occupies an early Christian settlement that is now a National Monument. A roughly circular stone wall encloses an area of approximately 68 metres north to south and 61 metres east to west. A roadway cuts through it on an east-west line, separating a small southern section from the main body of the enclosure. The grave mounds themselves lie in the northern part, each one between 1.8 and 2.5 metres in length, the quartz within them possibly placed there with some deliberate intention, as the stone has long been associated in Irish folk tradition with the dead and with protection. Near the northern enclosure wall, a roughly circular arrangement of large stones may mark a further grave, and additional burials have been found outside the wall, on the roadside opposite a stone cross. J. Cuppage's 1986 archaeological survey of the Corca Dhuibhne region documented the site in detail, and the graves' modest dimensions and their scatter of pale stone give the place a quality that is both unassuming and quietly affecting.
