Children’s burial ground, Baile An Bhúlaeraigh Theas, Co. Kerry

On the southern slopes of Knockmoylemore, above the broad valley surrounding Trabeg in County Kerry, a prehistoric earthwork has quietly accumulated a second identity.

What began as a rath, a single-ditched ringfort of the kind that once served as a defended farmstead or enclosure in early medieval Ireland, became in local memory something rather different: a burial ground for unbaptised children. The Ordnance Survey maps name it "Calluragh burial ground", a calluragh being the Irish term for such a site, where infants who died before baptism were interred apart from consecrated ground, neither fully within the community of the living nor entirely outside it.

The site is known locally as Lisbaun, or An Lios Bán in Irish. Its original form is that of a univallate rath, meaning it was enclosed by a single earthen bank and ditch. What makes it a little harder to read is the presence of standing stones, called orthostats, that hint at later or layered use. A pair of orthostats positioned roughly half a metre apart on the eastern side may mark an original entrance to the enclosure. A third stone, about half a metre high, stands a short distance to the south; its purpose is uncertain, though it may serve as a grave-marker connected to the site's use as a burial ground. The detail is careful and unresolved in equal measure, which is often the most honest thing that can be said about places like this. The archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula compiled by J. Cuppage in 1986 recorded the site as no. 315 in its catalogue of the Corca Dhuibhne region.

The landscape setting adds something to the atmosphere of the place. Looking out over the valley around Trabeg from the southern flank of Knockmoylemore, it is easy to understand why an already ancient enclosure might have been returned to, generation after generation, for the quiet burial of those the Church had placed outside its care.
