Children’s burial ground, Baile Ghainín, Co. Kerry

A low, raised platform sitting roughly two metres above the surrounding field, its upper surface scattered with loose stones and a few pieces of quartz, is easy to pass without a second glance.

But the kink in the adjacent field wall, bowing outward to accommodate whatever lies beneath, hints that the land itself was shaped around this place deliberately. This is a cillín, the Irish term for an unconsecrated burial ground used for unbaptised infants and others who, under Catholic practice, could not be interred in consecrated ground. Such sites are found across Ireland, often at field margins, old boundaries, or liminal landscape features, and they were used quietly, sometimes for centuries, before passing out of active use and out of common memory.

Known in Irish as An Cheallúnach, and recorded in English as Calluragh Burial Ground, this site on the Dingle Peninsula was still receiving the burials of children as late as the 1840s. An Ordnance Survey Name Book entry from around that time described it as a small square plot of roughly thirty metres to a side. The platform that survives today is irregular in shape, measuring approximately 17.5 metres along its longer axis and 11.2 metres across, and its exposed upper portion is crudely stone-faced in places. Two upright stones, one standing 1.2 metres high and the other 0.65 metres, are likely grave-markers, though they carry no inscription. The scatter of quartz stones across the surface may be incidental, or may reflect a practice, documented at other Irish burial sites, of placing quartz on or near graves, possibly for reasons now difficult to recover with certainty.
