Locally it is called a ceallúnach, the Irish term for an unbaptised children's burial ground, a category of site found across Ireland wherever Catholic doctrine once barred infants who died before baptism from consecrated ground. These were quiet, liminal places, neither churchyard nor wilderness, maintained by communities who refused to leave their children entirely unremembered. This particular example, at Formaoil in County Kerry, sits in a landscape that feels deliberately marginal, a promontory edge with a long view south over the bay.

The enclosure is roughly circular, bounded by a wall of large boulders and upright slabs nearly one and a half metres wide, enclosing an area of approximately eight and a half metres north to south and just under eight metres east to west. In the northern half of the interior, the remains of a small rectangular structure survive, measuring about five and a half metres by two and a half, along with a scatter of smaller boulders and further upright slabs. The upright stones are a recurring feature of ceallúnaigh across Munster, sometimes marking individual graves, sometimes serving as boundary markers within an already bounded space. What makes this site particularly striking is that it was used as a burial place within living memory, meaning it belongs not only to an ancient or medieval tradition but to the experiences of people alive in the twentieth century, at a time when the grief of parents was still being accommodated outside the formal structures of the Church.
