Children’s burial ground, Largan, Co. Galway

In a small hollow near the townland boundary at Largan in County Galway, a narrow strip of ground holds what may be a children's burial ground, known in Irish tradition as a cillín.

These were places set apart from consecrated churchyards, used for centuries to inter unbaptised infants and others who, under Catholic ecclesiastical law, could not receive a formal Christian burial. They are found across Ireland in their hundreds, often unannounced, often easy to miss, and this one is no different.

The site takes the form of an unenclosed linear area running roughly north-north-west to south-south-east, measuring approximately 14.6 metres in length and 6.9 metres wide. Scattered across it are numerous small set stones, likely marking individual graves aligned east to west, the orientation traditional in Christian burial practice. At the eastern edge stands a single uninscribed stone pillar, roughly a metre in height, with short stretches of low drystone walling extending to either side of it. No inscription, no dedication, no name. The pillar reads simply as a marker, its purpose implied rather than stated. About 30 metres to the north lies a ringfort, one of the circular earthwork enclosures common across the Irish countryside from the early medieval period, and the proximity of the two features is quietly telling. Marginal places, boundaries, the edges of fields and townlands were frequently chosen for cillín burials, locations that sat just outside the ordinary social and spiritual order.

The identification of the site as a children's burial ground carries a degree of uncertainty. The small set stones and the general character of the place are consistent with a cillín, but the designation remains provisional. That ambiguity is itself part of what makes sites like this worth pausing over: modest, largely unrecorded, and carrying a particular weight of unofficial grief.
