These were informal, unconsecrated plots, typically used from the early medieval period through to the twentieth century, where unbaptised infants were laid to rest outside the boundaries of the parish churchyard. The name survived on the map long after any visible trace of the place itself had gone.

The site was associated with a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead common throughout early medieval Ireland, usually consisting of a raised circular area defined by earthen banks and ditches. That ringfort was levelled in 1989, and with it went whatever physical evidence may have remained of the burial ground nearby. Local knowledge places the cillin within a second adjacent ringfort, though nothing survives above ground to confirm or mark the spot. The name 'Lisheen' on the older maps is now among the few remaining indicators that something was once there at all.

What makes this particular site quietly unsettling is less what remains than what was lost, and how recently. The destruction of a ringfort in 1989 was not unusual for its era, a period when many such earthworks across Ireland were removed to make way for agricultural improvement, often before their full archaeological significance could be assessed. The children buried at Luimnagh left no monument that outlasted the land clearance. The map name is, at this point, the memorial.
