Burial Grounds
At Parkanallacan in County Galway, there is a children's burial ground, a type of site known in Irish as a cillín (sometimes spelled cillin), where, for centuries, unbaptised infants and others considered outside the formal rites of the Catholic Church were laid to rest.
These were liminal places, deliberately set apart from consecrated ground, and they are found across Ireland in their hundreds, often tucked into old field boundaries, beside ancient earthworks, or at the edges of townlands. Their presence tends to be marked quietly, if at all, by a scatter of small stones or a low enclosure, with little to signal what lies beneath.
